Project Description:
The Kauffman Academic Residential Center is located in the heart of the University of Nebraska – Lincoln’s City Campus. This building is home to some of UNL’s best and brightest students. Careful consideration to the needs of the students was at the forefront of the design and material selection for this project. The environment needed to be safe and quiet which made precast concrete hollowcore the preference for the flooring system. A total of 73,600 square feet of 8” thick hollowcore was used between all four levels.
Hollowcore combines the inherent attributes of non-combustible composition, long clear spans, dampened vibration and sound control. In fact, 8” hollowcore has a Sound Transmission Classification of 56, as compared to only 30 for wood floors. These qualities, along with speed of construction in any weather, make hollowcore the obvious choice for single or multi-level commercial and residential projects.
Bahr Vermeer Haecker Architects and Sampson Construction were in charge of the project.
